For the past two weeks I’ve been under the weather and it was all I could do just to get through the basics everyday. Right now one of those basics is babysitting  my three grandchildren pretty much every day. There were days when I would go fill glasses of water, change diapers, break up fights, and lie down in between each episode. If  it weren’t for my husband, life would have been pretty miserable. Since his work schedule is flexible, he stayed home and helped out as often as he could.

This past Thursday, I celebrated Thanksgiving with my family. We had four generations present from my husband’s side of the family. My son-in-law had a joyful reunion with biological father whom he had not seen in ten years. It was a good day and many positive emotions were experienced.

Well, it’s election day here in the United States. Each generation in my family is participating in some way. Both of my parents are voting. My husband and I went to the polls early this morning to cast our votes for the candidates we support. My younger daughter will be voting in a presidential election for the very first time. Even my grandchildren are eagerly planning to accompany their parents to the polls later on today. Although they are still very young, their homeschool group had a mock election last week where they voted for the fruit of their choice.

In the past month, two people who were close to me when I was growing up have passed away. One of them had suffered from a terminal illness so his death was expected. However, the other one had a sudden stroke and was dead within a few weeks although he had been recovering nicely. I don’t know about you but I have a hard time dealing with loss–of people and stability in my life.

I was watching the news last night and heard a truly heartrending story. During the recent earthquake in China, many parents lost their children – their only children. For a number of years, China has had a “one child only” policy in place. Therefore, when these parents lost their children, they truly lost their entire future. Watching the news story, I could see how utterly devastated these parents were. One set of parents who were interviewed said they did not plan to have another child because it would be too painful to risk also losing that child.
