Today is Father’s Day, a day when we traditionally honor the man who gave us life. The television ads and the store sales flyers would have us believe that everyone has a wonderful father who will appreciate a gift and a family dinner. I’m sure this is true for many families. However, for other people, their father is not someone that they respect or have had a good relationship with through the years. For those people, Father’s Day is an unpleasant reminder of bad times and a distant relationship.
If this is you, I encourage you to find another man who has served as a father figure in your life, someone who has inspired you to do things you couldn’t imagine and been there to encourage you when things were tough. Even those who have a good relationship with their father often have additional father figures who are special to them.
Don’t let this day be about your father to the extent that you dread it coming and can’t wait for it to be over. See it as a day to honor all the father figures in your life.
Remember this quote:
It is not flesh and blood but the heart which makes us fathers and sons. ~ Johann Schiller
