Music Interpretation Improves With Age

I have played the piano since I was four years old and have a music degree. I remember when I was in college that my piano professor told me I needed to put more feeling into my music. She mentioned this over and over throughout my four years studying with her. At the time, I thought that I was putting adequate feeling into my playing and wondered why she harped on it so much.

The other day I was playing a piece of music and realized that I now play much more expressively than I did as a college student. In fact, it is an automatic and effortless process for me now. I don’t have to think about it or monitor how well I do it. Who knew that getting older would improve my piano playing?

I guess it’s just like so many other things in life. With experience come better understanding and better communication abilities. You have much more to draw on emotionally as you age. So, remember that getting older is not always a bad thing. You will most likely improve in many areas of your life, particularly your creative hobbies and endeavors.

Embrace the future and your past. Let it shine through the different areas of yourself that you present to the world.
