One of my favorite daytime TV shows is “The Doctors.” On a recent episode, Montel Williams appeared with a young woman named Alex who is dealing with the disabling condition of dystonia which causes involuntary muscle contractions which are both awkward and embarrassing. Alex used to be a dance instructor and, due to this condition, had basically given up on a very important part of her life.

All the news recently is about Swine Flu, how it’s spreading, what we should do to be safe, and on and on. Unfortunately, many media outlets choose to use fear to sell their story instead of providing rational accurate information, and so many people are truly frightened. Just the name, Swine Flu, has a horrible undertone to it. However, it’s good to remember that it is just a type of influenza. People can recover. It’s not an automatic death sentence.

After having been in remission for some time, one of my neighbors is very ill with cancer. The ambulance has been to her house several times over the last month and she’s not doing too well at the moment. I can only imagine how terrible I would feel if a member of my family were suffering this way–but her husband always has a smile on his face. Whenever we speak about his wife and her condition, he chats in such a friendly manner. If I didn’t know what he is going through with his wife right now, I would never guess his situation. I know that he must suffer a great deal inside but he is showing the world a positive face.
